why we’re involved

Eco Biosystems is interested in green spaces that have direct and latent outcomes for society, economy and the environment. For instance urban green spaces could be integrated into both water sensitive urban design, bioresource production, biodiversity and urban food production. This means that urban green spaces could be more completely integrated into the mosaic of the urban metabolism and the fabric of society.
While Eco Biosystems has not been directly involved in a project of this nature, we have been consulting, researching and project managing in an area with a similar ethos. For instance, one current project underway has the plan to augment aquaculture into municipal sewage treatment. This is similar to water sensitive urban design, in the way ecological knowledge is used to enhance and optimise an engineered process.

Why Eco Biosystems support the vision

The 202020 Vision is important for many reasons, the top reasons for support are as follows:
1.Increase biodiversity and reinstate engineered ecosystem processes into the urban environment

2.Increase green spaces for promotion of a culture of ecological interconnectedness

3. Decrease the urban heat island effect

4. Increase community health and well being

5. Promote green tech or eco technology

6. Urban food production

With the careful design of integrated green spaces, it could be possible to provide aesthetics as well as various outcomes for environmental and community resilience.The most obvious example is urban food production, which could be undertaken by community groups or by new enterprising businesses. Green roofs, green walls, food forest parks, verge orchards could all be considered as urban green spaces. These could incorporate food production while simultaneously supporting urban biodiversity and bioresource recovery. This kind of integrated green space could have many flow on effects for energy conservation, carbon emissions reduction,and green tech entrepreneurs and local business. We are so influenced by our urban spaces, and greening these spaces in our cities might just green our minds and make for a vibrant sustainable ecoculture.

The RHSV has as in its prime aims to:

1 The Society acting as a peak, unifying body for groups with similar, compatible aims and to provide leadership, resources, services, promotion and representation within the community at all social and political levels.

2 Developing and supporting events and programs in the general community to encourage participation in gardening and horticulture by all groups in the community, especially disadvantaged, disabled and aged sectors.

3 Developing and supporting environmental, conservation and community activities and programs for the general benefit of the community and the environment.

These aims are supportive of the 202020 Vision and the ability of the RHSV to be an effective partner in the process.
The RHSV has carried out and supported many projects including disaster recovery and community support activities. It is an ongoing aspect of the RHSV and its affiliated groups. We do it naturally.

Why we support the Vision

The promotion of the Green Space concept is directly compatible and relevant to the RHSV areas of interest and the interest of our affiliates and members.
The protection and development of green space is a vital aspect of community planning. The value of open space and the significant community benefits is balanced by pressure from development and other causes. Victoria, Melbourne in particular is known for its open areas and the beneficial affects they have. We need to protect what we have and develop additional green zones. New subdivisions in particular are subject to minimalist attitudes to open space. Community health and environmental enjoyment is impacted by the 202020 Vision. Our members as well as the wider community live in these areas thus it is incumbent on the RHSV to support and promote the 202020 Vision.
The RHSV has a diverse range of community groups including garden clubs, community gardens, specialist societies and environmental groups such as field naturalists and Australian native plant
bodies.
Our focus is entirely on the development of practices that support the 202020 Vision concept
.
Through our Victorian groups we have 20,000 members and 30,000 Australia wide.
Thus we can provide a physical support that is often more difficult to achieve than financial support.

The Australian Institute of Horticulture (AIH) has always promoted the wider use and best practice application of urban green spaces.

The Australian Institute of Horticulture (AIH) has always promoted the wider use and best practice application of urban green spaces. Of particular relevance to the 202020 Vision is the first of the institute’s aims being : To improve our physical environment through appropriate use of plants.

AIH has been established in Australia since 1960 and more recently has established a membership base in Singapore and Hong Kong. AIH has a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Parks Board of Singapore and shares the experiences and project developments of managing and reducing heat islands, the better use of available water and the amenity of spaces devoted to green uses. AIH members and the AIH Registered Horticulturists operate in a diverse and multidisciplinary horticulture community. Members and Registered Horticulturists work in both amenity and environmental horticulture in areas ranging from plant selection, propagation and management; landscape and horticulture design and landscape maintenance. AIH members have a broad knowledge of, and practices in, all areas of urban and production horticulture. Members have strong representation in professional advice providers on urban and green replenishment projects in Australia, Asia and the South Pacific.

The institute undertakes a number of research projects to assist members, government and the public in better understanding horticulture and landscape management. These projects include a Queensland Waterwise Plant Database for the Qld. Government. AIH’s Continuing Professional Development programme includes seminars, field days and an annual Congress on relevant topics ranging from plant selection, soil health, horticultural propagation and landscape management. The annual Congress includes a number of highly recognised and prestigious industry awards to promote best horticultural practice such as Young Horticulturist of the Year, The Golden Wattle Award for services to horticulture and bestowing institute Fellowships.

The institute disseminates information on horticultural and landscape best practice through its bimonthly AIH news in Greenworld magazine which is distributed to AIH members and the Greenworld circulation of 5,000 issues; through the AIH webpage (www.aih.org); through direct mail e letters to members; through the AIH Facebook page and through AIH stands at events such as landscape conferences, plant fairs and garden festivals.

The Australian Institute of Horticulture (AIH) is a significant and long established representative of horticulture professionals. It is essential that a great project such as the 202020 Vision has the widest most industry support as possible for great success and the opportunities for new styles of horticulture that will come from its success. AIH believes there is an obligation to promote horticulture activities through projects such as the 202020 Vision.

OCULUS is a design based Urban Design and Landscape Architecture studio focused on creating great public spaces. We work for the public and private sectors throughout Australia, New Zealand, the USA and South East Asia. The studio has a commitment to projects that: bolster social interaction; are based on achieving public amenity; are inclusive; are delightfully individual; and respond sensitively and cleverly to their particular environmental setting.

Over the last 15 years we have gained extensive knowledge designing and delivering a broad range of project types of varying sizes and scales. Our experience includes: the planning and design of new towns; urban regeneration; land management; campus design; health facilities design; streetscapes; public places and plazas; parks; urban waterfronts; river and creek restoration and rehabilitation; WSUD responses; landscape structures and buildings; forecourts and lobbies; roof and vertical gardens; play spaces; urban furnishings; public art collaboration; public and private gardens; horticulture; design guidelines and report writing.

Why we support the vision

Retaining and managing spaces for the local survival of nature is one area where we can make a major difference for the future of the campus. We also set examples for the surrounding community through this activity. Much of our attention is currently on the importance of habitat restoration. All species have particular habitat needs. In addition to local factors like soil fertility or climate, habitat structure very often involves inter-dependencies between the various plants, animals and nutrient-cycling microbes. When the extent of a habitat is substantially reduced by changes to land use, the dependent biodiversity often becomes vulnerable to decline, possibly even local extinction. The Macquarie campus contains examples of biodiversity under threat from past extensive habitat loss. Around four hectares of the endangered Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest (STIF) community occurs as remnant bush around the University grounds, particularly to the northwest of the Mars Creek lake. STIF was once the most common forest type throughout the Ryde municipality, but only about 1 per cent of that original forest now remains in this area.

Alpine Nurseries is one of Australia’s largest wholesale nurseries that has been in business for more than 30 years. Alpine operates from 4 locations at Dural and Annangrove in Sydney, at Alstonville in the Northern Rivers region of NSW and at Impact Grasses in Brisbane. Alpine is focused exclusively on trade customers, including landscape contractors and designers, local Councils, property developers, garden centres and Government agencies. The business is capable of providing plant material for any project from huge infrastructure projects, down to a small backyard renovation. Alpine grows very large trees in 1,000 Litre containers, all the way down to tubestock for roadside plantings. It also has an extensive, Australia-wide network of growers that can supply varieties not grown by Alpine or where Alpine stock is not available. The Sales Division is a group of about 13 staff that actively source Alpine and other stock for customer orders. In addition the Alpine Trademart is a wholesale trade market providing a cash and carry alternative to plant procurement. There are about 100 staff employed at Alpine and key Alpine values are quality in stock production and in all business processes, teamwork and energy. The benefits of trees and other plant life is irrefutable. As urbanisation continues the need for accessible green space becomes more and more critical to the communities health and wellbeing. Gondwana Landscapes and Consultancy specialises in indigenous flora, native plants and low water use gardens. Our goal is to design and create a drought resistant native garden to suit our client’s needs, or revegetate areas using cost effective low disturbance techniques. We offer a tailored consultancy service with the option of a report or garden plan to create a new garden or rehabilitate an area that needs some help to become wildlife habitat. We offer regular maintenance of your garden or rehabilitated area, taking care of weed control, brush-cutting, pruning, fertilising, natural pest-control, soil erosion control and identification of indigenous species. If there are existing garden areas that need attention we can advise or provide labour for rejuvenating old gardens with pruning, mulching and feeding. We specialise in revegetation by using a process of assisted regeneration if native plants are already present or nearby, or by re-planting using locally indigenous plant species. A combination approach can work well and is very cost effective, especially where planting of tube-stock or direct seeding is used. Weed control for fire hazard reduction with the removal of standing weedy grass and woody weeds to leave only the native plants. This greatly reduces fire risk, while increasing the number of native plants. Gondwana Landscapes and Consultancy also participates in educational programmes, the radio and printed media and are available for public speaking.

City of Darebin is a local government area in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Bordered by Darebin and Merri Creeks, it has an extensive network of parks and gardens. Over 144,000 people call Darebin home.

The Darebin community places great importance on the quantity and quality of open space made available to them, and Darebin City Council’s newly endorsed GreenStreets Streetscape and Urban Forest Strategies are evidence of our commitment to increased greening.

Both strategies set targets to increase the quality and quantity of green space, acknowledging the importance green spaces play with regards to health and wellbeing, stormwater management, urban heat island mitigation and biodiversity.

Darebin values all of its open spaces and focuses on municipality-wide greening with the revegetation and management of Merri and Darebin Creeks, and the upgrade and development of small neighbourhood pocket parks through to large regional parks.

Why we support the vision

The 202020 Vision clearly aligns with the Vision of the Horticultural Therapy Society of NSW: to 'Connect People and Plants for health and healing'. Our Society knows that rehabilitation for people with physical or mental health conditions will benefit and heal faster when they have access to natural environments or simply, plants. For people with certain physical conditions, the access to natural environments may not be straight forward. We advocate making green space or natural areas accessible for all, for the benefit of all. Some 20 years ago, company management began to remove plants from offices, which is since been shown to compromise worker health and productivity.Having access to green space for health or to grow culinary items is desirable. The shift about 2 decades ago with cities such as Sydney, losing their green space and hot concrete surfaces ever more dominating is at last turning around. Our Society advocates for and supports such measures as a pathway to healthy bodies, minds and spirits.

The City of Adelaide has 760 Hectares of open space under its care and control. This is primarily made up of the National Heritage listed Adelaide Park Lands that surround Adelaide, which were designed by Colonel William Light.

The Infrstaructure Management Department of Council is responsible for the asset planning of a broad range of infrastructure and includes all of the landscapes, trees, streetscapes, water features that supply our community with a level of service related to sport, recreation, events & social activities.

Why we support the vision

Trees supply a connection to our environment which is so very important for the ongoing health and well being of all who work, reside or recreate in it. More than ever before we need to give back to nature and increase the quantity of our tree assets for so many benefits that have been already identified.

The City of Adelaide is proud to be offering $200,000 in the Green City Grant Program that encourages residents, businesses and property owners to create a pocket of greenery that adds to their street appeal and helps make the city’s streets and public spaces more attractive and enjoyable.

Funding is available to cover up to half of the cost of each greening project. Grants start at $500 for residents and $1,000 for business and building owners, up to a maximum grant of $10,000 in matched funding.
Greening projects that enhance the presentation of a property need to be visible from a street or other public place and can include:

• Living walls
• Green facades
• Vertical gardens
• Window boxes
• Greenery that spills over balconies
• Vines and climbers on verandahs or other structures
• Upgrades to existing verge gardens

Grants can be used for both small and large scale projects that help make the city a greener, cooler and more attractive place to live and work. The Green City Grant Program is also contributing to the delivery of one of the City of Adelaide’s key strategic goals of increasing the amount of green space and greenery in the built-up areas of the city by 100,000 square metres by 2020.

why we’re involved

With Timandra Design & Landscaping (TD&L) commencing in 1995, the combined business knowledge is 40 years. With many awards attributed to TD&L, there is a strong sustainable ethic attached to every landscaping project. Clients are encouraged to include trees in their gardens for not only the aesthetic effect but the considerable environmental effects. Alison, TD&L’s sustainable designer is also a strong proponent of plants inside the home. In the garden, there is a place for both deciduous and evergreen vartieties, with a strong emphasis on indigenous where possible. Timandra is a regional business [in SW Victoria] ready to take the fight for more trees to the local councils in which they work - there are too many trees currently being removed without replacement.

Why we support the vision

TD&L would like to see the vision brought forward. If regional councils in particular, had a target that they had to meet by a certain year, it might make the residents within the council region more aware of the need for trees in their gardens. According to Alison “the obsession that is constantly voiced about leaves in gutters is so aggravating. To not grow trees for this reason is mind-boggling”!

It is unfortunate that some nurseries who sell trees lack adequate knowledge about what they are selling, e.g. different trees require different soils or conditions and grow to different sizes. This then often means that certain trees are planted inappropriately, giving that tree a bad name. It’s the tree that’s blamed, not the person who advised its placement. There should be a stronger degree of accountability attributed to plant nursery salespeople when they advise their clients.

Provision of habitat for different birds, as a food source for large and/or small birds, and their effect on the hydrological cycle, are all redeeming features of trees that are constantly overlooked. Trees also provide wonderful shade in summer - this cannot be bettered with sails that people use which provides no evapotranspiration relief whatsoever. And trees help to shade western facing windows on hot days through summer. TD&L definitely support the planting of more trees.

Why we support the vision

Three reasons of many as to why we support the vision. Trees absorb odours and pollutant gases (nitrogen oxides, ammonia, sulphur dioxide and ozone) filtering the air by retaining particulates in their leaves, bark and lowering air temperature. Temperatures in Melbourne have risen 3°C in the last 50 years as tree coverage declined and the number of heat-absorbing roads and buildings increased. Cities can be cooled up to 7°C, by shading homes and streets, breaking up urban “heat islands”. Trees shield our children from ultra-violet rays. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the world. Trees reduce UV-B exposure by about 50 percent, thus providing protection to children at schools and playgrounds - where children spend hours outdoors. Trees reduce violence in neighbourhoods. Areas that are barren have shown to have a greater incidence of violence in and out of the home than their greener counterparts. Trees and landscaping help to reduce the levels of fear.
